The name of the suburb comes from the collection of rocks that were found at the 17-mile mark from the mouth of the Brisbane River. The area of Seventeen Mile Rocks was largely industrial until the mid-1970s. Now it is a residential suburb on the Brisbane River, opposite Fig Tree Pocket. Located about 11 km southwest of central Brisbane, the area was declared a disaster zone in January 2011. The floodwaters were estimated to have flooded over seventy-five percent of the state’s population, displacing 5 900 residents from 3600 homes. Forty-eight thousand homes had to be rebuilt and scores of others required extensive repairs.
