Location

A suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, Seventeen Mile Rocks is located 11km south-west of the city’s central business district. The suburb sits on the banks of the Brisbane River opposite Fig Tree Pocket. Its name comes from the collection of rocks at the mouth of the river. In 1869, the Sinnamon family purchased the land and established the first farm. In 1880, the Sinnamon family founded a church. The area was first an industrial suburb but has since been developed. Today, the suburb is a residential area. The suburb is home to more than 3,000 people and is located in Queensland’s south-west.

Subdivisions

Since the 1950s, land subdivisions in Seventeen Mile Rocks have taken place. In the 1960s, Sinnamon Park was developed as a Methodist project, which displaced Rocks school children. Subdivisions followed, including the Jennings and Hooker estates. The Sinnamon Park Progress Association lobbied for the new suburb to be separated from Seventeen Mile Rocks, which it did in 1989.
