Jindalee is a residential district in Brisbane, Queensland, about 12 km south of the city center. It was formerly known as Seventeen Mile Rocks and was surrounded by a rural locality with a narrow bridge that crossed the Brisbane River. It was also named after an Aboriginal expression that means “bare hills.”
In the year 1918, a town planning conference discussed the area. Although the suburb was considered an outlying district of Darra, it was ahead of its time. A four lane bridge across the river was financed by Centenary Estates Ltd. to facilitate subdivisional development. The Centenary Bridge was opened in 1964, coinciding with the township’s centenary celebration of responsible government. Centenary Golf Links in Jindalee, along with the State primary school, were flooded as well. Read all about it.
