Queensland Maritime Museum South Brisbane

The Queensland Maritime Museum is located on the southern bank of the Brisbane River near the Goodwill Bridge. This museum has many fascinating displays of historical ships. Whether you’re a seafarer or just interested in the maritime world, you’ll want to visit this museum. It is open to the public on most days, except for Wednesdays. You can even bring your dog along for free. It is a fun family activity and is well worth a visit!

The museum is located in the heritage-listed South Brisbane Dry Dock. The museum’s original purpose was to serve as a repair facility for warships and was in operation until 1973. In the museum’s collection, you’ll find the hull of the World War II naval frigate HMAS Diamantina. Other exhibits include a steam tug, a WWI-era pearling lugger, and a World War II era frigate.

A major highlight of the museum is its Lighthouse Museum. The museum houses the country’s largest collection of lighthouse artifacts. It has been continuously expanding its collection and boasts the largest collection of lighthouse artifacts. This museum is not just a museum for sailors, it’s also an excellent place to learn about the rich history of Queensland. If you’re in the city, visit the Queensland Maritime Museum South Brisbane QLD Australia today! The museum is closed on December 24, 25, and 26. And on April 25, the museum will have limited hours.

A great place to also visit is The University of Queensland Art Museum St Lucia>>

For the best experience, ask a volunteer guide to give you a tour of the Museum. You can also get a complimentary audio guide from the reception area. There are two exhibition floors to visit: the museum’s maritime museum and Dry Dock. In addition to sailing ship models and merchant ships, the museum features a historic dry dock, built in the 1870s. The museum also specializes in showing off historic vessels, such as Jessica Watson’s Ella’s Pink Lady, which was famous for her solo southern hemisphere circumnavigation in the same year.

Another important museum in the South Bank is the Queensland Art Gallery. Located adjacent to Old Government House, this museum features an impressive collection of more than 3,000 works of art. Its collections explore themes of identity and culture. You can find artworks by Grace Cossington Smith, Charles Blackman, Jimmy Pike, and others. There are also frequent temporary exhibitions of Australasian and local artists.

The museum’s future is in doubt. While it has received generous grant funding and private donations, it has struggled to maintain its core operations. The recent outbreak of the coronavirus has caused its volunteer base to decrease by more than 40 per cent. This has lowered revenue, and the museum has had to rely on fundraising to keep the museum operating. It is the largest maritime museum in the country, featuring the warship Diamantina and the fictional Jessica Watson’s Ella’s Pink Lady.

The Brisbane Botanic Gardens encompass 100 hectares of bushland, lakes, and botanical treasures. You can explore this park on foot or by bike. You can even enjoy the views of the CBD skyline. You can also unwind at the Epicurious Garden Brisbane. Founded by volunteers, this garden is full of lush plants, herbs, and vegetables, and has a peaceful atmosphere. So, the next time you’re in Brisbane, make sure to include this museum on your itinerary.
